 What's Happening? From our interactive museum exhibits to our Research Library to our premier meeting and event space, there's always something fun happening at the Oregon Historical Society. P & D: Photography & Designers November 15, 2008 Free Day Program in Partnership with the 3D Center for Art & Photography
Programming includes activities for children of all ages. They will learn about creativity through listening to stories, looking at the exhibits, seeing a demonstration about stereoviews and doing a craft project. Adults will enjoy hearing guest speaker Ron Kriesel talk on "A Short History of the Stereo Card" at 1pm. Ron is a founding Board Member of the Portland 3D Center and an expert in all things 3D. He has an extensive stereo card and stereo slide collection and is an award winning stereo photographer. A partnership of Holy Names Heritage Center, Oregon Historical Society, and McMenamins, History Pub brings Northwest History to you in a lively pub setting!
Come learn more about the region’s fascinating past while enjoying food and drinks. A bombardier with the 17th Bombardment Group, Wilton Jackson survived 61 bombing raids over Europe during WWII.
Using the top secret Norden Bomb Sight, he scored a direct hit on a critical German gun emplacement in Toulon, France. Hear tales of adventure and even a bit of romance as he recounts his “ninety seconds over Toulon!” The program concludes with a moment of recognition for all veterans and the playing of Taps by a WWII bugler. Oregon Experience From historical biographies to issues and events that have shaped our state, Oregon Experience is an exciting television series co-produced by OPB and the Oregon Historical Society. The series explores Oregon's rich past and helps all of us — from natives to newcomers — gain a better understanding of the historical, social and political fabric of our state.
Each half-hour show brings to life fascinating characters — both familiar and forgotten — who've played key roles in building our state into the unique place we call home. Coming In November The River They Saw The beauty and magic of the Columbia River Gorge has attracted photographers for more than 150 years. The River They Saw will chronicle the history of the Gorge with rarely seen images crafted by Carleton Watkins, Sarah Ladd, Benjamin Gifford, Al Monner and many others. These early photographers left a stunning visual legacy through images still considered among the greatest landscape photos ever made.

Raymond Loewy and Andy Warhol: Commerce, Culture, and Art in 20th-Century America
A lecture presented by the curator of the Raymond Loewy exhibit, Dr. Glenn Porter, Director Emeritus, Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware.
America’s consumer culture was shaped in significant part by the work of the advertisers, industrial designers, and commercial artists who defined much of the nation’s visual landscape in the 20th century. Pioneer industrial designer Raymond Loewy and Pop artist Andy Warhol both spent a full decade as highly successful commercial artists before moving to their principal careers in industrial design and in art. Dr. Porter will examine the commercial art and subsequent careers of these two major figures, who reflected and influenced broad patterns of cultural change in America from the 1920s through the 1960s.  41st Annual Holiday Cheer Please join us for the 41st Annual Holiday Cheer: A Celebration of Oregon Authors and Artists on Sunday, December 7, 2008 from noon to 5 p.m. Gather for an afternoon with more than sixty Oregon authors and artists as they display, autograph, and sell their latest work at this popular event.
