Tours of Temporary Exhibits

Carleton Watkins's Stereoviews of the Columbia River Gorge

Carleton Watkins is considered to be one of the finest landscape photographers of the early American West, and during a series of trips from 1867 to 1885, he photographed Portland and the Columbia River Gorge, capturing some of the first photographs of iconic landmarks such a Castle Rock, Cape Horn, and Multnomah Falls, as well as life, work, and transportation along the river.

Columbia River Vistas:  The Art of James E. Stuart

This Oregon History Museum Exhibit is a wonderful depiction of the artist's work.  James Stuart studied art in San Francisco, and first visited the Pacific Northwest in 1876.  He was known for his documentation of the details of Indian life.  The description that accompanies each piece come directly from the artist's hand as found on the back of each of his paintings.

Raymond Loewy:  Designs for a Consumer Culture

Raymond Loewy was the most prominent industrial designer of the 20th century.  As he once said, his firms created everything from "lipsticks to locomotives."  This exhibition showcases Loewy's work, placing it in the wider context of the shaping of a modern look for consumer culture.  His career is brought to life by an array of original drawings, models, products, advertisements, photographs, and rare film footage of Loewy at work.
